Topography
Sri Lanka has a land area of approximately 65,000 sq. km. From north to south the country is
353 km long and 183 km wide from east to west. The centre of the island is dominated by a region of hills. The rest of the country consists of coastal stretches and plains.
Climate
The country has a tropical climate with wet, dry and arid weather zones. The average temperatures range from approximately 27oC to 32oC. The central hill region is cooler with temperatures averaging 20oC. In general the climate is hot and humid during the day and cool and pleasant in the evenings. The country experiences two monsoons annually - the South West monsoon from May to July and the North East monsoon between November and January.
