The
Service sector accounts for a little over half of total output.
In 2002 this sector contributed 54% to GDP, an increase of
6% from the previous year. Improvements in telecommunications,
financial services, trade, tourism, and port services enabled
this growth.
Communications has been displaying a double
digit growth trend following the restructuring of the sector
in the early 1990s. The sector grew by a further 19% in 2002
due to the introduction of new services and facilities, and
better marketing. The mobile telephone network in particular
has grown substantially in the past few years. Telephone density
at present is very low, thereby providing great potential
for future growth. Forward looking reforms and the introduction
of new policies by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission
will also provide additional momentum to this sector.

Tourism too plays a vital role in
creating both foreign exchange and employment for Sri Lanka.
The sector is poised for significant growth with the country
being considered a favourable destination for not just sun-and-sand
tourists but also for eco and cultural tourism. In a bid to
further develop tourism the Government has commenced promotional
drives in both Europe and Asia, and has also undertaken initiatives
with seven countries to increase the frequency of flights
to Sri Lanka
