Sri
Lanka is a unitary republic with both a President and Prime
Minister. The President in consultation with the Prime Minister
appoints the cabinet of ministers. The country's legislature
consists of a 225-member Parliament. Both the Parliamentary
and Presidential terms are for a period of six years. The
country is further divided into nine Administrative Provinces,
which are governed by Provincial Councils.
Sri Lanka's legal system is based on a
mix of British Common Law, Roman Dutch Law and the customary
practices of the country's three main ethnic groups. The Supreme
Court is the highest court in the country. It is presided
over by a Chief Justice and six to ten associate justices.
The country is divided into five judicial circuits and further
divided into district courts and divisional magistrates courts.
