Introduction
From 1987 to early 1990, most of the businesses and infrastructure in the South were destroyed because of civil unrest. This led to the recognition of the need to develop the economic structure of the South to avoid such civil uprisings again.
On recognition of the wealth of skills and entrepreneurship available in the South and previous economic unrest, DFCC Bank decided to open its second branch in the island in Matara. Initially a representative office was opened on 15th October 1990, which was subsequently converted into a full fledged branch on 21st of February 1991.
Thus DFCC became the first development bank in the South. By 1994, the Matara Branch became the major financier for small and medium projects in the South.
